The song in the video I made below was inspired while I was watching a travel show in which they visited a country in Africa. Which African country escapes me but during one of the scenes a song was playing in the background.
A man was playing a simple blues riff and singing the most agonizingly beautiful melody over it. I couldn’t understand the words but I knew it must have been about a heart break somehow. A few days afterwards, I wrote this song with that same feeling and sentiment in mind. Filling in the best words I could find to fit that plaintive tone.
Sometimes our best inspiration can come from just one world away. Maybe not completely outside of your field but just out of your particular niche or comfort zone. For instance, a web designer finding inspiration from an interior decorator. Both fields are design related, but rarely connected. What can a web usability expert learn from a Feng Shui master or a video blogger from a morning radio show, the fashion designer from a gothic cathedral.
A have written a few other songs this way. Building one song from the key, tempo and time signature of a baroque string quartet I heard on NPR for example. Next time you are looking for that creative spark, simply peak outside of your box.
You don’t have to look very far. Often times looking one world away is enough to find the inspiration you seek.
While unsuccessfully searching for a song on YouTube that sounded like the one I remember from that African travel show, I came across the following three videos. I wanted to add them here just in case one of them was meant to inspire you.
