In this Ted presentation, Youtube’s head of user experience Margaret Stewart tells how once a copyright infringement is detected the copyright holders are given a choice as to whether or not to allow it.
Surprisingly, they often do.
Most rights owners, instead of blocking, will allow the content to be published and then they benefit through the exposure advertising and linked sales.
She also recommends against copyright holders auto-blocking borrowed content as rights holders would miss out on new art forms, new audiences, new distribution channels, new revenue streams and providing joy to the world.
