Why You Haven’t Got Your Google Wave Invite Yet

*Post Updates At Bottom

The obvious reason you haven’t received your Gwave invite yet, is the fact that nobody has invited you :)

But if you’ve managed to wrangle yourself an invitation from one of the 100,000 preview invitees or the original dev sandbox invitees, originally handed out by Google, here are a few thoughts on why you haven’t got in yet.

All that I’ve talked to on Google Wave were awarded 8 invitations to give out. Some have claimed that certain big wigs got more, but I haven’t personally talked to anybody who has.

Once you invite somebody into Gwave, it says that they have been ‘nominated’ which to me means that the invites are placed into a queue somewhere. Some said that a few of their ‘nominations’ have got in but I’m not sure that these people weren’t already among the original Google invitees and it just took them longer to accept their invitations.

If you read the image above it says “Invitations will not be sent immediately. We have a lot of stamps to lick.” What I think Google is doing is using new Google Wave users gradually in order to test how robust the system is and to fix errors along the way. They have a big influx of new users and I’m sure they are experiencing bugs that they hadn’t foreseen. Note it also says above “Keep in mind that this is a preview so it could be a bit rocky at times.”

I believe that, as they shore the system up, they will begin accepting the new nominations in increments that they believe they can handle without crashing. I’m imagining the ‘nominations’ will receive their invites in a week or so, but this is just my guess.

Personally, I wish I had 100,000 invites myself to give out.

I can’t wait to see you on the inside.

*UPDATED Oct, 3rd

My original thoughts have been somewhat verified by a few Google employees working on Wave.  First of all special thanks to Anthony Baxtersenior Google software engineer, for commenting on this post and letting us know that I was on the right track.

There were also these two tweets from Lars Rasmussen, who led the development of Google Wave, and lead Google Wave project manager Stephanie Hannon, which stated things along the same lines.

I’ve also verified from inside Google Wave that some of the ‘nominations’ have indeed received their invites. Will Moody was nice enough to let me quote his Google Wave email invitation.

Jeff XXXXXXXXX has invited you to preview Google Wave!
Google Wave is a new online tool for real-time communication and collaboration. A wave can be both a conversation and a document where people can discuss and work together using text, photos, videos, maps, and more. Learn more at wave.google.com. This is still an early preview of Google Wave, so you may run into some bumps along the way but we look forward to your feedback.

It’s nice to know that our ‘nominations’ will see who invited them. Will Moody also said that he was given 8 invites to give out himself, so all of you expecting invites will hopefully be able to bring 8 of your pals along as well.

That’s more or less how its working, yes. Scaling up gradually.

Thank you so much for the info.

So the people who are “nominated”, don't have the power to invite a FURTHER eight more of their friends? That's very not-good.

Thanks for clearing this up! Makes sense why so few invites

      You’re welcome :)

Thanks Jesse. I was thinking the same thing today. I’ve been waiting two days for an invite/nomination to come from Steven Cains on friendfeed. He was nice enough to share this with me. I think he could sense my frustration level was rising. I guess I’ll just have to be patient a little longer.

Ahh, now I get it. Thanks!

I’ve also been “nominated.” So, when do you think I will get my invite? It got sent on Oct. 1 around 1 PM Vancouver / Los Angeles time.

I’m not sure… As it is now Google is trickling the ‘nominees’ in, as Anthony Baxter said above, they scale up gradually.

it’s been four days since I’ve been invited (or nominated) by one of my friends. Still I don’t have luck :(

Of course the other side of this is that it keeps the excitement up. I remember when I first started sending gmail invites out most people had no clue what gmail was. This release is of a different order.

Personally I think it sucks that people who were “nominated” this week got invites before people who initially signed up for an invitation in May. I’ve been in anticipation of this product since the morning of the announcement, and I have to live on every youtube clip to get my fix. Shame.

My guess is that the secret to getting early Google invites is probably to use lots of their services: GMail, Analytics, Webmaster tools, AdSense, Docs, Library, Picasa, Reader, YouTube, Knol, etc.

I was lucky enough to be one of the original 100K. Unfortunately, I have nobody to Wave with. None of my nominations have received their invitations. And, I do not know of a way to search for people who already have accounts.

BTW, my daughters and I have started a blog to track our experiences using Wave. One daughter is a college junior and the other is a recent PhD. So, between the three of us, we should get some great views. The blog is http://www.bloggingthewave.com.

You can run the search ‘ with:public ‘ to see a listing of public waves you can participate in :)

Gaah! October 6th now and no invite-mail yet :(

    • nilz

Still no mail! Gaaah! Why even tease us with the possibility to be able to get in and use Wave, when they then choose to be this slow with sending out the invites?
A bit like blizzard, you could sign up for the Starcraft2 beta almost 6 months ago, and no beta yet :P

      • nilz

Just to keep you readers updated:
One week since my friend sent all his “nominations” now.
None of them have gotten invited yet :(

        • http://jessenewhart.com Jesse Newhart

I don’t think any of mine have got in yet either, but if you’ve seen inside wave, you’ve not only seen how much potential it has but also how much work the Google team needs to do on wave before it’s ready for prime-time.

They are scaling up, but very gradually.

  • http://www.sindark.com Milan

I got an invitation today, but it didn’t say that it had come from anyone in particular.

I sent out my invites to some fellow long-time GMail users, but none of them have been granted access to Wave yet.

    • http://www.sindark.com Milan

Out of my 364 Google contacts (many of them early adopters and tech-savvy people), only five are now on Google Wave.
